With the advances in medicine, technology usage in the healthcare field is inevitable. Various health care organizations have stressed the importance of trained professionals to handle health care data. Accordingly, the Healthcare Informatics MS Program at the University of San Diego has been designed to meet the strong demand for professionals with advanced education in health care information systems. The program is cross-disciplinary and draws faculty from healthcare, business, engineering, and computer science to prepare future professionals with the technical, analytical, and innovation skills necessary to provide future leadership. Healthcare Informatics is an interdisciplinary field located at the intersection of computer science, knowledge management, and healthcare. The program combines automation, management and improvement of health information to support the health care industry. It prepared me for success with a practical curriculum that has developed my technical, programmatic and analytic competencies while addressing contemporary issues in informatics such as population health analysis, data security, clinical documentation and workflow optimization. It has also provided me with the range of skills necessary to take on a leadership role in informatics in any health care organization and to apply such highly marketable skills to any new challenge.
Over the course of the program, I have gained considerable knowledge in workflow and database design and management, design for the integration of human and technology systems, application of information systems to solve clinical problems, advanced leadership skills in project/technology team management, and organizational leadership in data and technology management. The program has also developed my knowledge of leadership, conflict resolution, financial management, data management, strategic planning, and policy development including professional and ethical responsibility. While this program is well suited for professionals who are already working in a variety of clinical and non-clinical roles, it is also forms a foundational bridge for many who are transitioning into health informatics without any healthcare background at all. The Healthcare Informatics MS Program at the University of San Diego is designed to build from a foundation that prepares graduates for future success in an industry that is projected to experience fourteen percent (14%) growth over the next ten (10) years, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is exactly why this program stood out for me.
